Meta has not appealed its expulsion from IAB Sweden, which has confirmed that the company is no longer a member of the industry body.
The company was formally excluded on 11 March following a board vote. The process unfolded after an initial vote on 10 March saw members agree to allow Meta to remain within the organisation, but without a board seat. However, it was later determined that the board was not legally permitted to impose such a condition.
Within 24 hours, a second vote was held, resulting in Meta’s full expulsion.
Meta had the opportunity to challenge the decision at IAB Sweden’s annual general meeting on 15 April. However, the organisation has confirmed to MediaCat UK that no appeal was made.
The board cited Meta’s insufficient efforts to address ‘deceptive ads’ as the primary reason for its decision.
A Reuters investigation, published in November 2025 and based on a review of internal Meta documents, alleged that Facebook and Instagram users are exposed to an estimated 15 billion ‘higher-risk’ scam advertisements each day. It also suggested that up to 10% of Meta’s 2024 revenue — approximately $16bn — was generated from ads linked to scams and banned goods.
Meta’s expulsion has drawn attention to other IAB divisions globally, but chapters in the UK, US and Australia have confirmed that Meta remains a member.
Meta has been approached for comment.
